‘The curriculum – what pupils learn – is the very core of education.’ (Ofsted, Principles behind Ofsted’s research reviews and subject reports, 2021). The National Curriculum however is just one element in the education of every child and so the Sea View Trust working with subject leaders across the Trust has developed its own ‘skeleton’ curriculum. Although fundamentally based upon the key knowledge and skills set out in the National Curriculum, our Trust curriculum fills in the gaps left by generic key stage outcomes to ensure that the core content and specific year group outcomes have been identified in every subject area. Identification and inclusion of enrichment activities beyond the scope of the National Curriculum combined with opportunities to build on learners’ cultural capital also ensure that our curriculum meets the needs of every learner. Regular curriculum review at both a whole school and subject level ensures that our curriculum is right for our learners and that curriculum leadership is effective.
