The Vision 

At The Sea View Trust, we believe that preparing young people for the future means equipping them not only with academic knowledge but also with the values, skills, and understanding to thrive in a changing climate and contribute to a sustainable world.  

Our sustainability vision is to lead by example—embedding environmental responsibility into every aspect of Trust life. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, building climate resilience, and empowering our pupils, staff, and communities to take meaningful climate action.  

We aim to:  

  • Create a culture of sustainability across all schools, where climate awareness and environmental stewardship are part of everyday learning and decision-making.  

  • Support each school to develop and implement a Climate Action Plan within a clear, Trust-wide framework.  

  • Invest in sustainable operations and infrastructure that reduce carbon emissions and enhance biodiversity.  

  • Equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and agency to become sustainability leaders in their communities and future careers.  

To realise this vision, we are on a journey to significantly reducing our emissions by 2030, and becoming Net Zero by 2050.  Net Zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gases produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. Achieving Net Zero requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible and balancing any remaining emissions by removing an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. 

 

The Strategy 

As laid out in The Sea View Trust Sustainability Strategy (June 2025), we are adopting the NGAs Six Cs model to create a framework which embodies the following: Culture, Curriculum, Community, Campus, Careers, CPD. This framework will be used to address the following strategic objectives:

  • Achieve Measurable Progress Towards Net Zero by 2030. 
  • Embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) across all curricula.  
  • Develop green skills and career pathways for pupils.  
  • Improve the sustainability of our estate and operations.  
  • Foster a culture of environmental responsibility across all stakeholders.  

The Sea View Trust acknowledges that all settings are different, and whilst some actions will be generic and/or sit at Trust level, others will be bespoke to individual settings.   Some actions identified here will be given timescales outside of the academic year, the plan is a rolling document, reviewed on a cycle of continuous improvement. 

 

The Journey So Far 

To prepare for the journey to net zero, The Sea View Trust has undertaken considerable steps to ensure that sustainability sits at the heart of its operations. 

Key areas of focus have been: 

  • CPD Both individual as part of degree research (Leadership for Sustainability) and trust wide (Connected Leaders) to prepare Trust & school leaders for the journey ahead 

  • Trust wide carbon footprint baseline – carried out by a 3rd party, to assess Scope 1 & 2 emissions 

  • LED Lighting Scheme – Funded through capital grants, new LED lighting was installed across all Trust buildings in AY23/24.  (£172k) 

  • 100% Renewable Energy – AY 24/25 100% renewable energy contracts were signed across the Trust.   

  • Decarbonisation - Funding for solar panels, heat pumps and fabric upgrades through a successful public sector decarbonisation scheme grant, PSDS.  This is delivering a trust-wide decarbonisation programme, installing heat pumps, solar PV, and insulation upgrades across five schools in one coordinated project (Ongoing during AY 25/26). Estimated saving 311.61 tCO₂ annually. (£2.6m / £2.2 grant funded, £400k Trust contribution) 

  • DfE Rebuilding Programme – Applebee Wood School joined the Trust in September 2025. The school is currently being rebuilt to latest energy efficient standards, including heat pump and solar panels.  A living roof will add to the biodiversity and support net zero.  

The Sea View Trust Emissions 

CarbonBit completed a detailed assessment of Scope 1 & 2 emissions where these were available. This activity was carried out in Spring 2024, utilising a full year of energy usage. November 2023 was chosen as the month in which to create the following base line.
